Over 30 years ago, Tonari Gumi was established by Jun Hamada to help struggling Japanese-Canadians living in the area once known as Japan Town of Vancouver. Nurtured through the years by its dedicated staff and volunteers, Tonari Gumi came to offer a variety of cultural, educational and senior based programs, congregate lunches, outings and services such as transportation, interpretation and translation. With its warm and welcoming atmosphere, it truly became a "home away from home" for many Japanese-Canadians.

Since that time, Tonari Gumi has undergone many changes. New faces greet visitors and while many of the same programs and services are offered, others have been developed such as meals-on-wheels, to adapt to different needs of a changing community. However, the bridge between the past and the present is still strong, thanks to our many corporate and individual sponsors and Human Resources and Social Development Canada's New Horizons for Seniors program, Tonari Gumi's seniors had the opportunities to share their recipes and rich experiences with younger volunteers. Many of the recipes are family recipes and ones that have significant meaning to the lives of the seniors. The recipes are wonderful and intriguing yet practical. We hope that this book will enrich your life the way it enriched the lives of our seniors.
